If you are looking for an all natural DIY recipe to clean your clogged drain, try this easy salt and vinegar drain cleaner!
Required Material
- 1/2 Cup Salt
- 1/4 Cup Baking Soda
- Bowl
- 1/2 Cup Vinegar
1. Salt
Take half a cup of iodized salt in a bowl.
2. Baking Soda
Measure a 1/4th cup of baking soda and pour it over the salt in the bowl.
3. Pour Mixture In Drainage Hole
Mix the content in the bowl well and pour it directly on the open drain that is having the clog.
4. Vinegar
Pour half a cup of white vinegar into the drain. It’ll start bubbling due to the reaction of baking soda and vinegar after you pour the vinegar so don’t worry.
Wait for 15 minutes to allow the solution to work. If the clog is tough, wait for 30 minutes.
5. Boil Water
Boil 3-4 cups of water in a pot and pour it onto the clogged drain. The abrasive qualities of salt with work with acidic vinegar to clean up even the toughest clogs in an entirely nature-friendly way.

I guess my bath tub drain must clogged all the way to the street cause it didn’t work. How long should you wait until you try again?
You can buy a special tool to remove the drain in your bathtub it’s just simply on screws and then you can clean your drain very easily
For bath tubs I would get a ‘zip strip’ it’s like a 24 inch long thin piece of plastic with barbs on it and it pulls out the hair. It’s gross but oddly satisfying. You can buy them on Amazon- the knock offs work just fine. I also started seeing them at the dollar tree stir.
I have been doing the baking soda and vinegar for years. but had a bathtub drain that it would not move no matter how much boiling water, plunger, etc…. ended up researching on line and found product called PEQUA. worked like a wonder. I now use it whenever the drains start to slow down. I have roots growing into some of my pipes! I was so thrilled I wrote PEQUA on 3×5 cards and gave it to all my friends. a few reported back and I solved their problem also. I still use baking soda and vinegar if I am in the mood in my kitchen sink. Another trick my plumber taught me is to stop up sink. fill with hot water, from tap is OK. when full pop the stopper and the water will now be a solid force pushing through the drain pipes which will push better than just water dribbling past clogs.
Has any body tried this method in a shower where 2 teenage girls with very long hair is always clogging up the pipe
Yeah it definitely works for long hair clogs. My hair is long and is always clogging my shower drain but this clears it up just fine – almost like brand new.
Use cheap hair remover like nair squeeze a cupful down drain let gravity take it down
It de solves the hair, over night best. Then run hot water down to rinse out. Depending on how much hair stuck will determine how often you do this. After initial clean up I did it every week
I purchased a mesh drain cover and put it over the drain in the shower tub and it catches the hair. Then I wipe the dry hair off the mesh cover with a paper towel and no more hair clogs.
I don’t buy the abrasive part.
From experience make sure your water is boiling & enough water to wash the pipes clear. I had to have a plumber come out after I had a plugged pipes. It took him at least 2 hrs to break it up & most of it was the baking soda that was solid.
There is a $4 product we buy at Walmart that works in the tub /shower drain VERY well. It is in a black jug and is named Instant Power Hair Clog Remover. I pour about 2 cups into the drain at night before going to bed and our morning showers wash everything down. We do this when the drain first begins to slow. This is a really effective product.
Be careful using large amounts of salt in your drains if you have an on-lot septic system. The salt will kill the bacteria in the septic tank and defeat the purpose of the tank, which is to digest organic materials. Also, if large amounts of salt are used by many people in a community, the salt can upset a municipal wastewater treatment system. I have over 40 years experience in wastewater treatment design as an engineer. I know what I’m talking about.

If you use a hair snare bathtub/shower drain problems don’t happen. I have used them for years…. through four kids and my 70 year old pipes & sewer are going strong. They are inexpensive and available just about anywhere (Amazon, Walmart, hardware store, etc)
