Learn how to make chapstick with vaseline and use it as an alternative to chemical chapstick that tend to damage the lips in the long run!

Recognizing the harmful effects of the physical environment, work stress, and the general hustle of life we live in, most of us have adopted a skincare routine. It is an essential part of our daily life that helps to keep skin healthy and youthful. Sooner or later, everyone realizes what poor skincare can do to the skin. It speeds up the aging process and the natural skin repairing process slows down. People have become more conscious about their skin lately but they tend to forget to take care of their lips. Our lips do not have natural oil glands, making them even more susceptible to dryness. Hence, it is essential to provide extra care to the lips too. However, using chopsticks with flavors and scents can prove to do more damage than good. You must ensure to use natural products or products with minimum chemicals to provide nourishment to your lips. Learn how to make chapstick with vaseline besides learning the benefits of vaseline to get a kick start to your lip care regime.

Reasons for Chapped Lips?

Chapped lips are typically caused by the harmful effects of the environment, including sun exposure and dryness of the winter air. Other reasons for chapped lips include excessive licking, dehydration, breathing through the lips, exposing to air conditioning for long periods, eating spicy food. Dry lips can also be linked to B vitamin deficiency or low levels of iron and zinc in the body.

Vaseline for Lips

Vaseline or Petroleum Jelly is a by-product of petroleum and has occlusive properties, implying that it helps lock in moisture. It is a mixture of mineral oils and waxes, which form a semisolid jelly-like substance that has been used for a long time for treating dry lips. It has a mix of hydrocarbons and is extracted from the lighter oil. With glycerin, mineral oils, and aqua, Vaseline has been an approved over-the-counter skincare product. It was first used for healing wounds but now has become extremely popular for treating chapped lips.

Vaseline locks the moisture in, but it cannot do that if your lips do not have any moisture. Hence, it would be best if you used Vaseline along with a humectant. Humectant first takes in the moisture from the air, and then Vaseline can help lock it in. Below are some vaseline chapstick recipes to heal your dry and chapped lips.

How To Make Chapstick With Vaseline

1. Coconut Lip Balm

Mix equal quantities of coconut oil and Vaseline. Pour it into a small container and freeze it for 30 minutes. Coconut oil will give moisture to your lips and vaseline will help seal it.

2. Aloe Vera Gel and Vaseline

Take one teaspoon of Vaseline and melt it in a microwave for 1-3 seconds. Add 1/4th spoon of aloe vera gel into the mixture. If you are using natural aloe vera gel, then the life of the balm will be less. Cool it in the refrigerator for 20-30 minutes, and it is ready to use. If you start smelling a foul odor and you have used natural aloe vera gel, discard the chapstick immediately.

Add Ons

  1. You can make colorful lip balms using lipsticks or food coloring—even natural food colors like beetroot powder for giving a natural color.
  2. You can add lemon juice, vanilla bean extract, or other extra ingredients to make flavored lip balm.
  3. For extra nourishment, you can add a Vitamin E capsule or other oils such as almond oil.
  4. Avoid adding chemical ingredients to avoid damaging the lips even further.

Points to Remember

  • Vaseline can clog the pores around the mouth and hence, should be carefully applied on the lips only.
  • Vaseline is heavy in texture and can feel very prominently on the lips.
  • Do not use Vaseline on bleeding lips as it can cause infections.
