Maintenance and cleaning of furniture are amongst the most overlooked yet essential tasks in household chores. In addition to that, if you have glossy furniture at home, it is even more important to clean and maintain it properly. An accidental spill from a teacup or the absence of coasters can leave marks or stains on your glossy furniture if not cleaned immediately. While cleaning up later does take time, there are specific ways that you can get the stains out of your favorite polished furniture.

How to Clean Glossy Furniture Regularly

Firstly, one should never use chemicals or sprays, such as glass cleaners, as they ruin the lacquer on the furniture. Also, the silicone-based cleaners will leave a greasy layer over the lacquer’s surface, which is quite challenging to get rid of.

What you need to clean and maintain your glossy furniture is a soft microfiber cloth, clean water, and a feather duster.

When it comes to daily or regular cleaning, you can dust the furniture with a feather duster and get rid of the dust accumulated throughout the day. But, if you end up spilling something or have a lot of marks on your furniture, you can wet the microfiber cloth with clean water and rub it around the affected areas.

Make sure that spills are wiped off immediately to avoid stains, which are extremely hard to remove. Especially if your furniture is light-colored, and you spill some dark-colored drink or liquid.

Once the furniture is clean, you might notice a bit of water left on the glossy furniture. Make sure you wipe it off with a dry microfiber cloth to make it regain its shine. Please do not leave the water to air dry on this lacquered furniture because it ends up leaving the water streak marks. Also, there is something known as an e-cloth that is used for cleaning glass and polished furniture. It also helps in getting rid of the sticky stains on such surfaces.

Water Stains

Water stains or marks are easy to clean from glossy furniture. For the cleaning method, prepare a paste with salt and water (only enough to hold the salt together). Then rub it over the stains and wipe it off with a clean and dry microfiber cloth. Another way of removing water stains from this furniture is to use petroleum jelly. For the method, dab some petroleum jelly over the stains and leave them overnight. Then, wipe it off with a clean cloth in the morning.

You can also replace petroleum jelly with mayonnaise. The oily content of the condiment helps in removing the marks from the glossy furniture.

Note: Do not leave the mayonnaise on the furniture for more than a few hours.

Heat Marks or Stains

You can forget to use coasters some times, but the mistake shouldn’t cost you a lifetime of stained glossy furniture. To clean these heated drink marks, mix baking soda and water (only enough to bind the baking soda together). Then, rub this mix on the stains and wipe it off with a clean microfiber cloth.

You can also use toothpaste for such stains. For this, mix equal parts of white toothpaste with baking soda and rub it on the spots. Finally, clean the surface with a damp microfiber cloth and then a dry one to properly clean the surface.

Sticky Stains

Vegetable oil can easily remove sticky stains from your furniture. Rub some vegetable oil over the sticky stains on your glossy furniture. Then, let it sit for a few hours. Finally, wipe it off with soapy water and a microfiber cloth.

Sauces and Dye Stains

Start by cleaning the stain with soapy water. If you are still unable to get rid of them, add a few drops of vinegar to baking soda and make a toothpaste consistency paste. Now, rub this mix on the stain and clean it with a dry cloth immediately. Make sure you dry the surface properly after the cleaning process.

Dark Unidentified Patches

You might come across certain stains where you don’t remember getting them or the source of them. For such dark stains on glossy furniture, you can use bleach as a cleaning agent. However, you have to use this very carefully. Look for a special wood bleach for the cleaning method or use oxalic acid. Dab the bleach on the stains and leave it on for half an hour. Then, wipe it off with a damp cloth and then a dry one to avoid water stains.

Note: Do a reaction test on an unseen corner to check the bleach’s reaction to your furniture. Also, wear rubber gloves before cleaning the furniture with bleach.

Pen Stains

Start with cleaning the surface with soapy water. Then, rub isopropyl alcohol on the stain to remove it. Once the stain is removed, clean again with soapy water, followed by a dry cloth.

Note: Wear rubber gloves before cleaning the furniture with bleach.

We want to conclude this article on how to get stains out of gloss furniture with a reminder that coasters and placemats are a must if you own glossy furniture, as they help prolong your furniture’s life.
