Distearlydimonium Chloride | What Is It and Uses

Learn what is Distearlydimonium Chloride and what are its uses and whether it’s safe for use or not by giving this article a thorough read.

Distearlydimonium Chloride

Distearyldimonium chloride, also known as Dimethyldioctadecylammonium chloride or distearyl dimethyl ammonium chloride, is an organic compound popularly added in hair and skin products for its antistatic effects. It is a positively charged surfactant which is also classified as a quaternary ammonium salt.

In basic terminology, this compound has a positive charge that combines with the negative energy proteins of the skin or hair and leaves a silky-smooth coating. Exposure to sunlight, chemical treatments, rough washing, or any other frictional actions such as rough-drying can cause a negatively charged surface and decrease the lipid content, which makes hair frizzy, susceptible to split ends, and dullness. This chemical prevents this, making hair healthy, manageable, and smooth. It is typically an essential ingredient in hair products such as conditioners and shampoos but is now also added in skin moisturizers for its soothing properties.

Why Avoid?

Even with all its conditioning properties, there are still many reasons you should not use products with this synthetically formed chemical. Here are a few of the reasons to avoid the use of this chemical:

1. Non-biodegradable

This chemical has low biodegradability and can cause harm to the environment. They are especially toxic to aquatic life when entering the water bodies.

2. Irritant

It can irritate sensitive skin and eyes, causing mild rashes. As your shampoo or moisturizer has a direct contact with your skin, it can cause mild irritation and discomfort if you’ve sensitive skin.

3. Respiratory problems

This ingredient can be an irritant to mucous membranes and the upper respiratory tract in pure form. It can be toxic to the lungs and hence, should be avoided. Here’s a related study that was performed to detect the effects of inhalation of this chemical by rats.
